Green Culture: Closet Gold
One of women's favorite past times is shopping for shoes, shopping for clothes, shopping for handbags. Don't you notice
that every decade or so, a past style trend returns to the shopping floor? Maybe instead of shopping for the latest fashion
craze, you need to try your hand at clothes repurposing. Spend an afternoon with Princess Benn-James to learn her tricks
in turning something old into something WOW! Princess Benn-James is a mother, Special Education teacher, and fashionista.
Princess turns loose buttons, shells, and beads into beautiful jewelry; puts a new spin on a dress; and turns a T-shirt into
whatever she needs to strut her stuff. She learned to sew from her mother and is a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology.
Many of her fashion pieces come from her sewing machine and fabric bin. Repurposing, however, doesn't require sewing. Instead,
scissors, double-sided fabric tape, an eye for color and fabric, and a closet of clothes are your tools. Please bring a pen,
notepad, and a piece you want to 'give a 2nd life. Refreshments will be served. For additional information, contact John Watusi

Habitat for Humanity Queens Single Family
Homes Initiative
Habitat for Humanity – NYC is launching a Queens Single Family Homes Initiative
starting July 2013. Habitat NYC, along with committed volunteers, will be developing several phases of single family homes
and are interested in identifying qualified New York City residents that are interested in achieving the American dream of
homeownership. Our homeownership program is a rigorous endeavor whereby Habitat provides a “Hand Up”, rather
than a “Hand Out” and is highlighted by the future homeowners’ active participation in helping to build
their own home through our Sweat Equity opportunities. The Queens Single Family Homes Initiative will consist of rehabilitating
two and three bedroom single family homes with purchase prices that range around $200,000 to $300,000. In addition, the average
square footage of our homes is around 1,076 square feet. Our Family Services team will help our family partners throughout
the different stages of homeownership and are very excited to start working with Queens Families. If you are interested in
learning more about the program, please contact Nica Bautista at 212.991.4000 ext 309 or email her at nbautista@habitatnyc.org.

Student Volunteers Available for Volunteer Opportunities
The Justice
Community Program (JCP) at LaGuardia Community College is seeking partners from Community Board 12 organizations interested
in hosting student volunteers for community service and service learning projects at their sites. The goals of JCP are to
help build stronger and safer communities and to reduce crime and recidivism by engaging young adults -- who have been involved
in the criminal justice system -- in educational and community activities. All JCP participants are between the ages of 16
and 24, reside in Jamaica, St. Albans, or Hollis and are eager to learn leadership skills through community projects. They
would like to assist your organization in activities such as: cleanup, restoration and beautification projects including planting
trees, flowers or vegetable gardens; singing, baking, playing bingo, and other social activities at a nursing home or senior
center; facilitating keyboarding and computer literacy workshops for seniors; oral history projects; collecting items for
and assembling care packages for foster children; volunteering in a soup kitchen for food bank; bagging groceries in a supermarket
and are holding a food drive for families in shelters; volunteering in hospitals or hospices. They're particularly interested
in providing no-cost services to the communities in which most of our participants live. By becoming a partner with us and
allowing them to join in your community service projects, these young adults will be empowered to become active agents of
change in their own communities. For more information, or to request JCP student volunteers for your site, please call Nakita
